McAlester girls basketball put in a good effort in the loss to East Central Friday.
The Lady Buffaloes (Class-5A-4 4-16, 2-9) defeated the Lady Cardinals (Class-5A-4 5-9, 5-7) when the two teams met in mid-December, but the script flipped in the most recent meeting between the schools.
Things were looking up for McAlester from the start. East Central took an early 2-0 lead on a layup but Rylan Lesnau answered with two layups of her own to go up 4-2 two minutes and 38 seconds into the contest.
The Lady Buffaloes continued to excel on offense as Kambree Zummer hit a 3-point shot at the 2:22 mark to put the team up 12-4, prompting a Lady Cardinal timeout. But out of the timeout, it was McAlester which benefitted as Zummer connected on another three to go up 15-4 with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter.
East Central saw more offensive production from there and the game was 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Offense stalled for the Lady Buffaloes in the second and the Lady Cardinals went on a 15-4 run in the stanza to take a 26-20 lead at halftime.
McAlester got back to work in the third period and started to chip away at the lead. Two straight layups from the Lady Buffaloes made it a 30-28 game with 4:33 left in the frame. East Central called a timeout again to stop another McAlester run.
Just like in the first quarter, the Lady Buffaloes struck out of the timeout again as Lesnau hit a layup to tie the game 30-30 with 4:04 left in the period. However, East Central outscored McAlester 8-2 the rest of the way and held a 38-32 lead going into the final period of play.
The Lady Buffaloes whittled down the deficit to 40-38 with 5:45 left but the Lady Cardinals did what they had all game and weathered the storm to win the game 58-51.
Zummer led the way in scoring with 29 points behind her three makes from beyond the arc. Lesnau scored 13 points.
It was nearly two months since McAlester and East Central met in the game the Lady Buffaloes took 51-44 at home. The Lady Cardinals are a different team now with the addition of Chloe Woodson, according to coach Kourtnee Beshears.
“She was the one who would get to the rim, she was the one that would kick out for the three, was was that player for them,” Beshears said. “I feel like we sustained her decently but I definitely think she was a huge difference maker in the game for them.”
The Lady Cardinals kept a fast pace throughout the game, something Beshears said her team struggled with. But getting going on offense from the jump helped them stay in the fight all game.
“I think being able to keep our composure on offense sets the tone for the things that come out of that,” Beshears said. “We’ll have missed defensive rotations but it’s really our offensive side of things where we’ve struggled all season long.
“And I think if we can come out and set the pace offensively early, it helps carry over.”
McAlester plays again 6 p.m. Friday at home against Glenpool.
