Foul trouble and turnovers proved costly in McAlester girls’ basketball game against Claremore Friday.
The Lady Buffaloes hung around at the end of the game but couldn’t get over the hump in their 57-51 loss to the Lady Zebras.
McAlester got off to a hot start against Claremore with Kambree Zummer hitting two 3-pointers en route to a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Tides changed in the second period.
The Lady Buffalo offense went cold and so did their defense, which gave the Lady Zebras the opportunity to take a 31-29 lead at the halftime break.
Going into the game, coach Kourtnee Beshears knew what her team needed to do to win, but said Claremore’s intensity in the first half became too much to handle.
“The way to win the game was going to be defensive rebounds,” Beshears said. “And I think the moment that we got a little bit of pressure, we kind of just folded for a little while.”
Momentum for Claremore continued in the third quarter as McAlester continued to search for its rhythm. The Lady Zebras led 49-38 at the end of the third period.
The Lady Buffaloes gained some momentum in the fourth quarter behind Rylan Lesnau and Zummer’s 6 points each, but seven fouls from McAlester were too much to overcome.
As fouls became an isssue, Beshears reminded her players to control what they can control.
“I always tell them, they’ve got to be able to keep their head in those moments because we can’t control what they’re calling,” Beshears said. “But at the same time, whether they’re calling or not, how many (rebounds) did we miss? How many times did we not play defense like we should because we want to be lazy or we want to sit back?”
Zummer led McAlester in scoring with 21 points. Lesnau came second with 16 points.
Beshears said Lesnau’s consistent presence on the court makes her valuable.
“She doesn’t have to have every score but when her hands touch the ball, good things happen,” Beshears said. “Whether she’s making a good pass or whether she’s able to get to the rim, I think when the ball touches her hands, good things happen.”
Beshears will employ a new tactic for keeping her players engaged.
Each week the players will hand in their varsity jerseys and will need to earn the right to have them back based on efforts given in practice.
“I’m really trying to get into the accountability side of things,” Beshears said. “You’re not entitled to anything just because you’re on the team and you show up – that’s minimum, baseline behavior.
“I need you to show up and I need you to work when you’re tired, I need you to put in effort, I need you to go above and beyond.”
McAlester plays again at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Durant.
