A three-run third inning carried St. Paul to a series-wrapping victory in Omaha as the Saints held on late to top the Storm Chasers 4-2 on Sunday night, ending their two-game losing skid.
Ending his team’s 20-inning scoreless drought, Kyler Fedko plated Kaelen Culpepper and Matt Wallner with an RBI double in the top of the third, before coming home himself on Hendry Mendez’s RBI double two batters later.
Omaha countered with single runs in the third and eighth, before a Kendez sacrifice fly drove home Culpepper with an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
It was a policy that St. Paul nearly had to cash in as the Storm Chasers’ Alejo Lopez hit a two-out triple in his team’s final turn at the plate against reliever Julian Merryweather. Fedko suffered an injury in the left field corner while attempting to field Lopez’s hit and had to be carted from the field.
There was no immediate update as to Fedko’s condition.
There was a moderate delay as Fedko being tended to, but Merryweather swiftly brought his focus back to getting the final out as the last of six Saints pitchers to take to the mound. Moments after play resumed, Merryweather coaxed a harmless grounder to second base for the concluding out and earned his second save.
Ruddy Gomez claimed his first win with the Saints after coming on in the fourth inning as the second pitcher to appear in relief of starter Trent Baker. Combined, the half-dozen St. Paul pitchers allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out nine and walking five.
Mendez went 2 for 4 with his two RBI and Walker Jenkins went 3 for 5 as part of the Saints’ nine-hit game.
With the win, St. Paul and Omaha split the series three games apiece. The Saints improved to 61-46 with the win, while the Storm Chasers fell to 51-56.
Returning home to St. Paul with the victory, the Saints are off Monday before hosting Louisville in the opener of a six-game series at CHS Field Tuesday night. The hosts send LHP Aaron Rozek (2-1, 3.15) against Bats RHP Johnathan Harmon (0-1, 5.40) for Game 1, with first pitch scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
