Kansas baseball captured a Big 12 Conference tournament championship on Saturday, beating West Virginia 9-0 in Surprise, Arizona.

With the victory in the final, the Jayhawks secured their first Big 12 tournament title since 2006. They also became the first team to outright win the Big 12 regular season and tournament since 2009, according to a KU release. And now, with only the NCAA tournament next, Kansas (42-16) looks poised to host a NCAA regional.

“These guys are a special group,” Jayhawks coach Dan Fitzgerald said in the release. “That’s not a good West Virginia team, that’s an elite West Virginia team in all phases. They’re incredibly well coached, they play defense, they're super offensive and they can pitch. They’re the real deal. To do it against them is a monster feat. When you think of the Big 12 season and 10 weekends, it’s a mountain to climb and every weekend is a battle. Then, you come to weekend 11 and it’s another battle. Super proud of these guys. Great team effort and excited to bring this back home to Lawrence. Hosting a regional in Lawrence is going to be incredible. Incredibly proud, incredibly blessed and very thankful.”

West Virginia seemed to have the upper hand in the game, despite trailing 2-0 through six innings. The Mountaineers challenged so many times to score, before ultimately coming up short. And then Kansas’ offense struck big in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring six runs, and in the eighth added another reach that 9-0 final.

Kansas has already been in preparations at Hoglund Ballpark to host a NCAA regional, making alterations to its stadium to maximize capacity and enhance fan experience. It’ll learn, officially, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. (CT) when the announcement is made on which teams will be the 16 regional hosts. It doesn’t seem like fans need to be nervous, though, about whether there will be baseball in Lawrence again this year.
