May 31—GRAND FORKS — Buddy Kofoid is only in his second season with the World of Outlaws. But he hardly looked like a driver still searching for success Friday night at River Cities Speedway during the second annual Don Mack Classic.
Kofoid grabbed the lead from WoO season points leader David Gravel on Lap 6 and never looked back in taking the 40-lap main event at The Bullring — his first career win at RCS and fourth this season with the Outlaws.
He's currently in second place in season points and will go for a Dakota sweep on Saturday night when the Outlaws race at the Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo.
The Bullring also fits his driving style. He's another of the California drivers who have been successful with the Outlaws.
"I grew up on bullrings," said Kofoid. "It's a fun track."
Kofoid started second as Gravel was on the pole. Gravel was strong early but Kofoid slipped past the Connecticut driver with 34 laps to go.
"I just stayed on the top of the track," said Kofoid. "I knew it would come in and I just wanted to stay up there and keep my momentum. Gravel had the bottom working good and I didn't want to follow him."
There were a number of cautions and two red flags during the feature which ended just after 11 p.m.
Kofoid was never in any serious trouble after taking the lead but Gravel did surge in the final laps, finishing 0.303 seconds off the pace.
Donny Schatz finished third and had an impressive showing as he started 15th. Schatz, third all time in career WoO wins, has won 12 of the the 34 WoO races at RCS since the circuit started racing in Grand Forks in 2007.
Gio Scelzi and Logan Schuchart, both past WoO winners at RCS, rounded out the top five.
Mark Dobmeier was the top local finisher, ending 15th. He also won the Last Chance Showdown to earn the 20th starting spot.
"We were OK, but we certainly weren't where we need to be," said Dobmeier.
Jade Hastings was credited with a 21st place finish but the Grand Forks driver was impressive in his run. He started 22nd and drove up to ninth place before crashing on the back straightaway with nine laps to go.
"I was going for it," said Hastings. "We really had a good car, probably had a top six car."
There were 33 sprints on hand, one of the better field during recenet WoO races at RCS. In qualifying, rookie Zach Hampton set quick time at 10.172 seconds.
The NLRA late models complemented the WoO sprints. Dustin Strand won the 25-lap feature, holding off Tyler Peterson by 1.619 seconds.
Strand and Peterson have been the two top late model drivers in the area so far this season.
Strand and Peterson went 1-2 on Thursday night at a NLRA show at the Norman County Raceway in Ada, Minn.
Amelia Eisenschenk, the niece of Schatz, finished third, followed by Brad Seng and Ryan Corbett. Eisenschenk also had the fastest lap time of 13.230 seconds.
"That was a pretty awesome race," said Strand.
Strand started on the pole and was in good shape most of the race until the first yellow flag was waved with three laps to go, giving Peterson a final shot at the lead.
"I knew he (Peterson) was there," said Strand.
