Knoxville native starts three games for Nicholls baseball at Tennessee

No. 15 Tennessee (3-0) opened its 2026 baseball season with a three-game sweep versus Nicholls (0-3) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Junior outfielder Nico Rijo-Berger, a Knoxville, Tennessee native, started all three games in the season-opening series for the Colonels. He hit one single in each game against the Vols.

In the series opener, Rijo-Berger went 1-for-3.

He went 1-for-4 and struck out two times in game No. 2, while going 1-for-2, including one walk and one strikeout, in the series finale.

Rijo-Berger totaled four putouts defensively in the three-game nonconference series.

He transferred to Nicholls from Phoenix College in Phoenix, Arizona after two seasons. Rijo-Berger appeared in 49 games, recording a .315 batting average, 50 hits, two home runs, 33 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

He is from Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Phoenix, Arizona, and is the son of Jose Rijo-Berger, a former outfielder for the Mets and Dodgers.
