Kimi Antonelli's points lead trimmed after mechanical issue in Spain

Kimi Antonelli's lead in the 2026 Formula 1 championship standings took a hit in Spain. After Antonelli suffered a mechanical issue, taking him out of the race, Lewis Hamilton is only 41 points behind him. This comes after Hamilton won his first race in two seasons at Ferrari.

George Russell is 50 points behind the driver of the No. 12 car, so this is still a very good situation. Antonelli has over a full race on Hamilton and two races on Russell. Through seven races in 2026, Antonelli has won five Grand Prix events, taking advantage of Mercedes' speed.

It was a very disappointing development for Antonelli in Spain, as it represented his first finish outside of the points this season. Antonelli has the speed to run away with the championship, but he can't afford to have any more non-points finishes. For now, the Mercedes driver will focus on winning in Austria this weekend.
