MANHATTAN — Kansas State basketball is reportedly "zeroing in" on its next head coach.
CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein reported late Thursday night that Kansas State is expected to hire Belmont coach Casey Alexander to replace Jerome Tang. Rothstein added that nothing is done, but the two sides are working toward a deal that will make him the Wildcats' next coach.
Kansas State finished the 2025-26 season with a 12-20 record and a first-round exit at the Big 12 Tournament. The school fired Tang midseason for cause after a viral press conference in which he criticized his team. Tang retained high-profile lawyers to fight the characterization of his termination.
Kansas State athletics director Gene Taylor had about a month to find the school's next coach, getting a head start over every other high-major program. After firing Tang, he said he wanted to hire someone with head-coaching experience.
Taylor found his man, and he now hopes Alexander can re-energize the Kansas State fanbase and become the school's fourth consecutive coach to lead the Wildcats to an Elite Eight appearance.
Alexander is likely headed to the NIT for the second time since he took over Belmont, his alma mater. The Bruins won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship but were upset in the quarterfinals of Arch Madness. He didn't lead the Bruins to the NCAA Tournament, but he led them to seven straight seasons with 20 or more wins.
Alexander was responsible for leading the Bruins' transition from the Ohio Valley to the Missouri Valley without skipping a beat. The Bruins have finished no worse than fourth, and he's developed quality players, including Indiana Pacers guard Ben Sheppard.
Before Belmont, Alexander spent six years at Lipscomb, where he led the Bisons to an NCAA Tournament in his second-to-last season and an NIT runner-up finish in his final year. He also coached at Stetson for two seasons before moving within the league.
Alexander coached as an assistant at Belmont from 1995 to 2011, right after finishing his playing career under legendary Belmont coach Rick Byrd.
