Belmont basketball coach Casey Alexander is reportedly close to becoming Kansas State's new coach.
CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein reported on March 12 that Kansas State is expected to hire Alexander to replace Jerome Tang. Rothstein did not say the deal was done, but that both sides were working toward it.
Alexander could not be reached for comment.
Alexander is in his seventh season at Belmont and led the Bruins to their first Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship in 2025-26. Belmont (26-6), the No. 1 seed in the MVC tournament, was upset by No. 9 seed Drake 100-70 in the quarterfinals on March 6.
In the postgame interview after the loss to Drake, Alexander was asked about the Kansas State position and replied, "My plans are to be back at Belmont and have a great team and see if we can win March Madness. Unless you know something that I don't know, I don't think there's anything else to worry or think about."
Alexander, 53, has led Belmont to at least 20 wins in each of the three seasons since the Bruins left the Ohio Valley Conference to join the MVC.
Kansas State announced it fired Tang on Feb. 15 due to "recent public comments and conduct, in addition to the program's overall direction," athletic director Gene Taylor said in a statement.
The Topeka Capital-Journal published a list of coaches to watch as candidates for the position, and Alexander was on it. Other media outlets also linked Alexander to the position.
Alexander has been considered a candidate for other Power 4 positions, including Vanderbilt, in the past.
Alexander has been among the top mid-major coaches since his time at Lipscomb (2013-19). He posted a 113-84 career record at Lipscomb and led the Bisons to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2018 and the NIT runner-up in 2019.
In his seven seasons at Belmont, Alexander has posted a 164-58 record. The Bruins have won at least 20 games each season under Alexander.
Alexander, who played at Belmont (1992-95), spent 16 seasons as an assistant on Rick Byrd's staff. His first head coaching position was at Stetson where he went 24-26 from 2011-13.
His career record is 303-180.
Alexander led his first Belmont team to the OVC tournament championship and a berth in the 2020 NCAA tournament, which was canceled due to COVID. He led the 2020-21 team to the OVC regular season championship.
