Justin Rose McLaren clubs, explained: Why golfer made controversial decision to partner with racing company originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Veteran golfer Justin Rose has had an impressive few seasons at 45 years old, in large part because he is not afraid to try new things. Rose took that to a new level this year, as he is a bit of a trailblazer in the game of golf by using irons made by McLaren.
Rose is from England and McLaren is based in England, which is essentially how this partnership began. Rose was able to work with McLaren to create a set of irons he thinks are perfect for his game and implement them into the season immediately.
Over the past few years, Rose has been in contention at several majors but hasn't been able to secure a second major win to go with his 2013 U.S. Open title. If he is able to get a second major with his new McLaren irons, Rose will only add to his legendary status in the game of golf.
Here's a breakdown of why Rose chose to partner with McLaren.

Rose partnered with McLaren this year and is using the company's set of irons, a rarity in the game of golf. McLaren, which is known as a car manufacturer and Formula 1 team, is looking to diversify its foothold in other sports as well.
Rose said he planned to use the clubs earlier in the year, in February, but the clubs weren't ready yet, which delayed production. Therefore, the fact that Rose had to switch his set of clubs mid-season wasn't the intention, but it's also not something that worries the veteran golfer.

Why did Justin Rose partner with McLaren?
Rose said that he worked with McLaren to make sure his set of irons played the way he wanted on the course.
"It's something I've been involved with from the outset - helping the engineering team, really testing the very first editions of the club," Rose said when McLaren first unveiled the partnership in late April. "I've been kind of working with the project for well over a year probably. It's been exciting to this week finally launch it."

Rose added that his goal in changing iron sets is to "mitigate risk" and that he's done something like this midseason once before. However, he is confident that it's the right choice.
"I'm looking at some of the performance data that I'm getting on the range and out-performing what I have. That's the exciting part for me," Rose said.
Ahead of the PGA Championship, Rose further detailed why he was so confident making the change to McLaren during the season.
"I'm comfortable with them; the technology behind them is wonderful," he said. "I'm seeing more performance in my range sessions, the spin and the launch and the speed and all the stuff I'm seeing on the range is performance, and I'm seeing the performance."
