The Houston Rockets saw one of their most productive players last season walk away in free agency. While Josh Okogie was only on a veteran's minimum contract, he arguably had one of the best seasons of his career.
Even from a strictly objective stance, he literally did have his best three point shooting season ever at 38.5-percent. It was an absolute steal in free agency last summer, as covered on Roundtable.
Now Rockets’ GM Rafael Stone will look to make the same kind of snag once again, as Okogie signed with the Utah Jazz. With Dorian Finney-Smith just traded, there’s a sizable hole in the roster, as well as some extra cap flexibility, per Roundtable.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to go after another 3&D to replace the Josh Okogie and DFS minutes. They each have almost seven foot wingspans, and that aspect hasn’t been replaced by any of the new additions so far.
One guy who fits those measurements, but isn't currently a free agent, is Saddiq Bey for the New Orleans Pelicans. I previously suggested using Clint Capela’s contract to go after him for a backup wing role, but now that’s not even necessary.
Given the $13 million trade exception opened up by trading DFS earlier today, the Rockets could easily just take on Bey’s salary without any issues.
Unfortunately, that same trade limited Houston’s 2nd round picks, so making trades can be more difficult now. We’ll see how they choose to fill out the rest of the roster.
