ESPN reported last night that KC had offered a trade with the Cardinals for RB Jones, but the Cardinals turned them down. Does anyone know (for real) what the Chiefs were offering?

I don't think anyone knows. Cardinals are trying to play chicken with KC and are going to get stuck with nothing. They should take what they can get for him.

I thing it was probably a 6th or 7th round chhoice but no one knows. I am not sure what KC was thinking, but the Cards are in the drivers seat here and I wouldnt have traded him for that either.

With his cap hit being so low, then I would keep him on the roster-can never have to much depth.

If, however, the cards release him June 1 then I will be very pissed.

This is old news.

Update is that Peterson feels there will be ongoing discussions before and possibly during draft day to see if the two sides can work something out. He didn't come across sounding like the Cards were being unreasonable, and the body language of his comment suggests that a more palatable offer might be in the works.

Cardinals reject Chiefs' initial offer for Jones, but talks continue

By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

The Arizona Cardinals rejected the Chiefs' offer for running back Thomas Jones, but that doesn't necessarily mean trade talks are dead.

"They might listen to another scenario," Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said. "We'll continue to talk with them. Maybe something happens, and maybe it doesn't."

What the Chiefs offered for Jones is unclear. Whatever it was, it's difficult to picture the Cardinals refusing a sweetened proposal. Jones is a spare part in Arizona now that the Cardinals have Emmitt Smith and Marcel Shipp at halfback.

"For the right value, they would say goodbye to him," Peterson said. "We're continuing to talk about it. It could possibly come down to a draft-day decision. It could also be something that happens after the draft. We might acquire a running back in the draft that we're pleased with. That would put this in a holding pattern."

The Chiefs have run out of veteran options for acquiring a reserve halfback behind Priest Holmes, at least for now. They visited with Shawn Bryson and Olandis Gary, but they lost Bryson to a better offer from the Lions and never made a contract proposal to Gary, who signed this week with Buffalo.

Jones, the seventh overall pick in the 2000 draft out of Virginia, is an intriguing option. He hasn't played like a high pick in three seasons with Arizona but is a versatile back in the Holmes mode.

"For whatever reason, Thomas' production has diminished each year," Peterson said. "But we had the guy rated very high when he came out in the draft, and I still think that was accurate. We really liked him coming out of college, and it hasn't been that long."

The Chiefs will have Tony Richardson, Omar Easy and Derrick Blaylock back. They could use one, two or some combination of the three at halfback if Holmes doesn't return to full health from last season's hip injury.

The Chiefs also are looking for a veteran punter to replace Dan Stryzinski but have yet to make a contract offer to Tennessee free agent Craig Hentrich, who made a visit to Arrowhead Stadium last week.

But Peterson said the Chiefs may yet offer Hentrich a contract.

The Titans have told Hentrich they would like to re-sign him once they clear the necessary space under their salary cap. Hentrich is a popular player in Nashville and would like to stay.

"Hentrich has to make a decision whether he wants to leave Nashville or whether he would like to stay," Peterson said. "That's what it will come down to.

"I don't think he was wasting our time. We've had communication with him for a long period of time."

I think that is about right. I thought about this this morning. While most people think it was a very low ball offer, Carl may have gone to the other extreme:

Snoop Minnis, our 5th round pick and our 1st round pick (#16)

for

Jones and your first round pick (#6).

Of course the Cardinals would reject that offer.

I know the author said "for real", but I was thinking that KC may have gone to other extreme on a rejected offer.

He's over 6', but I think you got the weight right.

Regarding a players and pick-swapping for TJ, many (if not all) teams work with a numeric formula which assigns a value for every pick in the draft - so that when teams look to swap picks or balance out the fairness of a trade, everyone's on the same page.

Anyone have specifics on this?
