The Dallas Cowboys had an agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs this past spring, in an early effort to make sure they could grab defensive back Caleb Downs. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer recently carved that fact into stone while appearing on the Twins Take podcast. Asked about what it's like on draft day in regards to being able to take Downs, he allowed that there was a trade in place with the Chiefs that was thwarted by KC's move up to secure defensive back Mansoor Delane.

“We had four guys targeted that we really felt really strongly about that would fit great in our culture, in our football team, and Caleb was at the top of that list. We actually had a deal in place, a trade in place with Kansas City that we were hoping to be able to make a move for. But they moved up early in the draft...”

#Cowboys Brian Schottenheimer said Dallas had a deal in place with the Kansas City Chiefs to trade up and get Caleb Downs.

Of course that all changed when the Chiefs moved up to get Mansoor Delane.

The Chiefs were originally picking at No. 9, but moved up to No. 6 in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. And while there are several iterations that could've resulted in Dallas moving up to No. 9, this one probably makes the most sense.

The Jimmy Johnson trade chart values the No. 9 pick at 1350 points, while the No. 12 pick is at 1200 points. Both the Chiefs and Cowboys owned two picks in the first round, with Dallas originally sitting with No. 20 an the Chiefs with No. 29.

Adding those picks in to the swap would've had the Cowboys losing around 40 points, or the equivalent of a late fourth-round pick. Dallas would likely have been demanding a more even trade. That likely would've been the Cowboys adding pick No. 152 (29 pts) and No. 180 (18 pts) to their package in exchange for No. 109 (76 pts). That narrows the gap considerably.

Cowboys get:

  • No. 9
  • No. 29
  • No. 109

Chiefs get:

  • No. 12
  • No. 20
  • No. 152
  • No. 180

The Cowboys clearly had Malachi Lawrence identified as the edge rusher they were planning to target with the second of their first-round picks, actually trading back in the real draft from No. 20 to No. 23. Would he have still been available at pick No. 29 in this original scenario? That's a worry they didn't have to endure thanks to the way things played out in real life.
