After scoring five points on perfect 2-for-2 shooting in just two minutes in his previous Summer League appearance against Oklahoma City, former Clemson guard Jestin Porter got a much longer look for the Memphis Grizzlies against the Atlanta Hawks. Porter started in Memphis’ 96-82 loss and logged 29 minutes, finishing with six points, one rebound, and three assists.
The conversion percentage did not follow him the same way it did last time. Porter went 2-for-10 from the field and 2-for-6 from three, a much colder line after a tiny but tidy first impression against the Thunder.
Everyone is going to get a lot of minutes in the summer league. One night, superstar Cameron Boozer starts a whole game, scores 30 points, and shows his class; the next night, he doesn't play at all. If Porter wants a chance in the G-League, he has to be shooting better than 2-10 when he gets those minutes. It's harsh, but it's the truth in a jam-packed NBA farm system.
It wasn't only Porter who was off his game; Memphis struggled as a group, shooting 26-for-70 from the field and 11-for-36 from three. Atlanta had the cleaner night, hitting 46 percent from the field and 47 percent from deep while Devon Higgs led the Hawks with 22 points. The Grizzlies never fully found enough offense to keep pace after falling behind early.
For Porter, the first two Summer League games now show both sides of the process. In one game, he was barely on the floor but made every touch count. Next, he got a real workload, started, played 29 minutes, and had to deal with the other side of Summer League: missed shots, more responsibility, and a bigger scouting sample.
