The Boston Red Sox made major changes to the coaching staff earlier this season, including a change at manager. Among the changes made was Jason Varitek being reassigned.
While the official word on Varitek is that he was to be reassigned, he still does not have a new position in the organization. Craig Breslow recently said that Varitek has a place in the organization if he wants it, but he kept specifics to himself. Varitek spent 15 years with the team as a player, and another five-plus years as a coach. While many fans wonder what's next for him, his wife seemingly took a shot at Breslow on X.
"They have the 'smartest man in baseball' running the show… they’ll be OK without Jason, that’s what they wanted. It’s what’s best for the team," Catherine Varitek wrote on X.
Her putting "smartest man in baseball" in quotation marks is an indication of sarcasm and a clear reference to Breslow. The Red Sox are currently at 19-27, but not completely out of the race. They are just three games back of a wild-card spot in what has been a very weak American League so far.
It's still unclear whether Varitek will remain with the team or not. The entire situation has become difficult to follow for fans. Breslow and company are keeping things close to the vest, but Varitek's wife's comments seem to indicate that he will not be accepting a new role with the team.
