Jalen Carter’s record-setting contract ensures he will remain with the Philadelphia Eagles. It also keeps him alongside the teammate who has helped guide him from Georgia to the NFL. Carter agreed to a four-year, $152 million extension that reportedly includes $106 million guaranteed and can reach $160 million. His $38 million annual average makes him the highest-paid defensive tackle in league history.
The agreement came months after Philadelphia signed Jordan Davis to a three-year, $78 million extension. Carter said Davis expected his close friend and teammate to receive the next major deal.
Their relationship began at Georgia, where Davis was an established leader before Carter developed into one of college football’s most disruptive defensive linemen. They helped the Bulldogs win a national championship before becoming first-round Eagles draft picks in consecutive years.
Philadelphia selected Davis 13th overall in 2022. The Eagles traded up one spot to draft Carter ninth overall in 2023, reuniting the former Georgia standouts on a defense built around its front.
Their NFL responsibilities are different but complementary. Davis provides size and power as a run defender, while Carter supplies interior pressure that can disrupt passing plays before they develop.
The Eagles entered the offseason intending to extend both players. Davis completed his deal in March, and Carter’s negotiations continued as the defensive tackle market developed. Carter said becoming the highest-paid defensive tackle was less important than remaining in Philadelphia. The extension gives him both outcomes while preserving one of his closest relationships.
Davis told Carter he would be next. That prediction became reality on the first day of training camp, giving the Eagles two homegrown defensive tackles under contract through the primes of their careers.
