Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive tackle Jalen Carter reached historic territory with his new contract. The Philadelphia Eagles have signed him to a four-year contract extension that is worth up to $152 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. It also includes a $106 million guarantee.
His $38 million average annual value is well ahead of Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history. This comes a few months after his teammate Jordan Davis became the highest-paid true nose tackle in the league, earning a three-year, $78 million extension.
Carter and Davis are far from the only players from Georgia's 2021 national championship defense that have earned a major paycheck this offseason. Defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt signed a three-year, $57 million extension with the Green Bay Packers. Edge rusher Travon Walker also signed a four-year, $110 million extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Former Georgia and Green Bay linebacker Quay Walker signed a three-year, $40.5 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency. He reunited with Nakobe Dean, who also signed a free agent deal (three-year, $36 million) with the Raiders. Between Carter, Davis, Wyatt, Quay Walker, Travon Walker, and Dean, that's $473.5 million committed to players on that legendary Georgia defense.
Carter has lived up to being the highest-paid defensive tackle. He's already a two-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion. Injuries and an ejection limited him to just 11 games last season, but Carter still put up 33 tackles, five tackles for a loss, three sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and seven pass break-ups. He also blocked a field goal and an extra point.
Before his time in the NFL, he shined at Georgia. He helped the Bulldogs win back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. He was a second-team All-SEC pick in 2021 and a first-team All-ACC selection in 2022, even becoming a unanimous All-American in 2022. Overall, he totaled 83 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks.
Carter was talented enough to become the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but a major off-the-field incident caused him to slide. That allowed the Philadelphia Eagles to draft Carter with the No. 9 pick, and he's been an excellent pick so far. The Eagles have rewarded him accordingly.
