The winter sports season is underway and teams are finding their footing as they inch closer to league play.

There have been plenty of fantastic performances already and we will highlight five of those with our Athlete of the Week voting.

But before we look at this week's candidates, let's take a look back to last week. You voted and you chose Palm Desert basketball player Wil Wilson. Wilson had a 20 point, five rebound, four assist night in a win over Royal and he's averaging over 16 points per game.

This week's winner, as always, is up to you. Simply read the accomplishments of this week's nominees and vote for your favorite in the poll attached to this article at desertsun.com. Whoever has the most votes at noon on Saturday will be declared the weekly winner.

Nadia Frutkin, Palm Desert water polo​


What she did: The talented Aztec is up to her old tricks, starting fast for a Palm Desert that is off to a 4-0 start. She leads the team in goals during that stretch which included a wild 19-13 double overtime win over Citrus Valley.

Arianna Reyes, Shadow Hills girls soccer​


What she did: Reyes scored a pair of goals for the Knights in a 5-0 road win at Jurupa Valley. The talented junior didn't miss her chance as she cashed in on two of the three shots she took in that game, helping the Knights to their first win.

Albert Sauceda, Coachella Valley boys' basketball​


What he did: In a game against Desert Hot Springs earlier this year, made 11 of 15 free throws, four 3-pointers, and eight two-pointers. Add that all up and Sauceda had a 39-point night. He's averaging 21.4 points so far this season.

Grace Thomsen, Xavier Prep girls' basketball​


What she did: Thomsen went off in a win over Hamilton earlier this season she had a stat-stuffing night with 29 points and 20 rebounds, a rare 20-20 double-double. Thomsen and the Saints are 3-0 in the early season.

David Weischedel, La Quinta boys soccer​


What he did: Weischedel came up huge in a 3-2 win over Arroyo Valley scoring two goals to lift the Blackhawks to a win. The senior forward and the La Quinta Blackhawks are undefeated in four games this year, posting a 2-0-2 record.
