It's time once again for your weekly opportunity to vote for The Desert Sun's Athlete of the week.
We'll provide talented athletes who excelled in recent weeks and you vote for your favorite. Simply read the accomplishments of the stars and then vote in the poll at the bottom of this article at desertun.com.
Whoever has the most votes at noon on Saturday will be the weekly winner.
But before we look at this week's honorees let's see who you voted for last week. You clicked away and chose Desert Hot Springs baseball player Abraham Cervantes who had a three hit, three RBI, three stolen base game in a season-ending win against Cathedral City.
Now, here are this week's honorees listed in alphabetical order. Happy voting!
What he did: Indio speedster Damian Durinzi finished third in the Division 2 300 hurdles race in a time of 38.84. His time was 7th best across all divisions, easily allowing Durinzi to be the only desert Masters Meet participant from the Desert Valley League. He also made the Masters Meet last year.
What he did: Morales had his mark all over the Aztecs 11-7 win in their playoff opener. He pitched a complete game allowing just three earned runs and earning the win. At the plate he had two hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base.
What he did: Padilla came four inches from a CIF-SS title, finishing second in the Division 3 meet in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 7 inches. It was the fifth best mark across all divisionis and was Padilla's ticket to the Masters meet.
What she did: All she did at the CIF-SS finals was win two different Division 3 championships and finish second in another. Strange won the 100-meter hurdles with a school record time of 14.45 seconds. She then won the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 4 inches. She took second in the long jump (18 feet, 4.75 inches) and advanced to the Masters Meet in all three events.
What she did: The Lions superstar who has been nursing a hamstring injury gritted it out for her team in the playoffs and turned in two gems in two playoff wins. "Sai Sai" had 17 strikeouts pitching and hit a solo home run and was intentionally walked twice in a 2-1 playoff opening win. Then she came on in relief to strike out 12 and hit another solo home run in a 12-6 win in the second round.
