It's time for the Athlete of the Week as our desert spring athletes are really upping their game as we get down to the wire.
But before we look at this week candidates, let's look back at last week's winner.
You voted and you chose Palm Desert swimmer Ava Otteson after her record-breaking performance at the Desert Empire League meet and she didn't stop there. You knew what you were doing when you voted for Otteson, because she followed he DEL performance up by winning another CIF-SS title.
Otteson is the new CIF-SS Division 2 champion in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the race in a school record time of 4:52.02. She also finished third in the division in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.57. Wow!
Now let's look ahead to this week's nominees. Remember, all you have to do is read about their accomplishments and then vote in the poll at the bottom of this article at desertsun.com. The athlete with the most votes at noon on Saturday will be the weekly winner.
Here are this week's honorees listed in alphabetical order.
What he did: Carlton, a senior, won the Desert Valley League individual title with a 27-hole total of 120 over two days. He fired a 38 the fist day and an 82 on day two. He also performed well at the CIF-SS individual preliminaries shooting 79 at Bear Valley Country Club in Victorville.
What he did: Cervantes was just a menace on the basepaths in a regular-season ending win over Cathedral City. Cervantes went had three hits, three runs batted in, three stolen bases and a run scored in the win. The Golden Eagles open their playoff run on Friday.
What he did: The Rajahs ended their regular season with a 6-5 win over rivals Coachella Valley and Noah Hernandez got the win on the mound while striking out six, walking four, and allowing only two earned runs. The senior also had two RBIs and two runs scored at the plate.
What she did: She helped the Knights solidify themselves as the second-best team in the DEL in two crucial wins over Rancho Mirage late in the season. In the first game she went 3 for 5 with a double, triple, three runs scored and two steals. In the second game she had a whopping five RBIs, a double and two runs scored.
What he did: Ward was the MVP of the Desert Empire League individual meet and it was an easy choice as he picked up two individual wins and was a member of two winning relay teams. Ward didn't just win, but set the new DEL record in the 200 freestyle in 1:42.46 and the 100 backstroke 52.81 seconds.
