Ahead of one of the most highly anticipated group stage matches at the 2026 World Cup, the status of Norway's star striker, Erling Haaland, has been at the center of the discussion. With Norway set to face France on Friday, fans were eager to see Haaland face French star Kylian Mbappe. Unfortunately, because the matchups played out and this is the final game for both sides, it appears the 25-year-old star may get a game to rest ahead of the World Cup knockout phase.

Haaland, who's been a force through Norway's first two games, both victories, helped his country grab six points and secure a place in the knockout round. While France also has six points, Friday's matchup will decide which team is the group winner and who finishes in second place. But as ESPN's Mark Ogden reported, Haaland will begin that matchup on the sideline, as coach Stale Solbakken will rest 10 players.

Erling Haaland's status for the World Cup match vs. France

Haaland is currently tied for the Golden Boot with four goals in the World Cup, level with Argentina star Messi and Mbappe. However, if he remains sidelined for the entire game against France, as appears likely, it may ultimately affect his chances of securing the trophy. Not surprisingly, Norway's focus is on positioning itself best to have a shot at a legitimate run to win the World Cup, and they're doing so by resting a lengthy list of players.
