Sorry been a lull, but we're back in action!

This has been discussed before, but James Earl Jones, regardless of what he's in, has the Most Captivating Voice to me.

Liam Neeson
Kiefer Sutherland
Morgan Freeman
Humphrey Bogart
Cary Grant
John Wayne

Although he didn't have the career his son did, Robert Earl Jones (Luther in The Sting) had a very similar voice. Another victim of the House Un-American Activities committee.

There's plenty to choose from but I'll go with James Gammon and Wilford Brimley.

James Earl Jones....bar none.

  • Morgan Freeman
  • Hugo Weaving
  • Eddie Murphy
  • Anthony Hopkins
  • Samuel L. Jackson
  • Sean Connery
  • Chris Rock
  • Liam Neeson
  • Chris Tucker
  • Robert De Niro
  • Donald Sutherland
  • Dustin Hoffman
  • Al Pacino
P.S. I know this is "captivating" but I think all the actors above bring something so unique that you instantly recognize their voices which draws you into their characters.

I don't know if this qualifies as "captivating" but to paraphrase an oft-used line, John Cleese could read the phone book and make me laugh.

I agree with all mentioned but I give a shout out to Keith David. Great voice as exemplified by his many narrations like Ken Burns' The War and Jazz. I look forward to seeing him as Frederick Douglas in The Gettysburg Address. Another great voice is Avery Brooks(Hark/Capt. Sisco). Kelsey Grammer has a great speaking voice as well.

Oh, how did I forget Patrick Stewart. That guy would sound good reading the phone book.

James Earl Jones is at the top, for sure. Other honorable mentions, and some of my favorites, would be James Spader, Brad Dourif, and Mark Hamill. Ian McKellan and Ian McShane are two of my favorites also and would be closest to unseating James Earl Jones if he didn't have Vader on his resume, which is a huge plus.

I only mention it 'cause some- times
there's a man--I won't say a hee-ro,
'cause what's a hee-ro?--
but sometimes there's a man.
And I'm talkin' about the Dude here--
sometimes there's a man who, well,
he's the man for his time'n place,
he fits right in there--and that's
the Dude, in Los Angeles.

I knew I was going to love that film just from that opening monologue by Sam Elliot. So great lol.

No doubt.

I always thought if Darth Vader were re-voiced, the guy who played (voiced?) Xerxes in 300 would be a great replacement.
