I grew up on preseason being 1/4 of the season with 12 regular season games. Each regular season game is as important as the other - first or last in the NFL.

So this ignoring team and unit competence for the first games of the season bothers me. Fear and faith cannot live in the same stadium. Fear rules the preseason now, scared of getting hurt, scared of getting tired over long season.

Well I’m scared of throwing away a weak early schedule by waiting for a young defense to develop chemistry during the first quarter of the regular season. Counting eggs before they are fertile!

Especially with early division games this year. Preseason is not practice, it matters.

Agree. injuries can happen on any play in any game..but the information you gather in PS games is important.
I acknowledge there is added risk playing your starters against guys trying to get noticed... but back in the day coaches had gentlemen's agreements... starters play X number of series,...then 2nd team until Y...then scrubs finish the game..etc...
Defense usually comes together faster than offense...with a QB like ours that needs familiarity because of his trust issues I would really like to see our starters put together at least a complete half between the three PS games...final game being all bubble players of course.

Then of course there is the added joy of getting to see our rushing attack flatten a young D Line that is still thinking too much to know their assignments...thats always nice.

If virtually all the other teams played the preseason hard and the Cardinals didnt I would have an issue with them not playing 100%

However it seems moot to risk injury when every other team is doing the exact same thing. Just mtc

ordered a beanie wells white practice jersey this week - they're going for 15 bucks shipped on ebay
I have a boxed rookie signed Beanie Wells fancy red and white football, I won on the radio contest.

I went to a training in St Louis and picked up some Old school Cardinal drinking glasses and gear, lacking a decent Chicago Cardinal item, have Phoenix Cardinals stuff too in my collection.

McVay has popularized not playing your starters much in the preseason and everyone besides Andy Reid has realized he is right and followed suit. You are setting yourself up for disappointment if you except things to go backwards.

Sean McVay coached 8 seasons in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams. Between the years of 2017 and 2024, he compiled a record of 88-57 in regular season and postseason games. He won 1 Super Bowl championship, 2 conference championships and 4 division championships.

Awards:
2017 AP Coach of the Year
2017 PFWA Coach of the Year

Andy Reid coached 26 seasons in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. Between the years of 1999 and 2024, he compiled a record of 301-163 in regular season and postseason games. He won 3 Super Bowl championships, 6 conference championships and 15 division championships.

Awards:
2010 Maxwell Club Coach of the Year (Greasy Neale Award)
2018 Maxwell Club Coach of the Year (Greasy Neale Award)
2000 Maxwell Club Coach of the Year (Greasy Neale Award)
2002 Maxwell Club Coach of the Year (Greasy Neale Award)
2002 AP Coach of the Year
2002 PFWA Coach of the Year

Yeah I dunno...kind of a stretch to say McVay was right and Andy Reid is wrong.
especially when you look at how the rams usually start the season slow

and Andy Reids career win percentage is
.651

while McVays is
.606

I mean that would be great if it were true. Many other teams play their starters including the best team year over year KC is notorious for it.

Oh I'm aware that Andy Reid is a better coach, I think he's easily the 2nd best coach of all time. But I don't think that's because of his preseason snap counts, he's great because he's the most insane workaholic in the sport. He's one of a few old school coaches left, and even he's been toning it down recently. Last preseason their starters played 24 snaps over the course of the 3 preseason games.

What is different is a full practice week against another team. Seems like this activity occurs yearly where in the past it seemed occasionally and less intense.

pre-season is irrelevant and not needed. College football doesn't play a pre-season schedule. Look at OSU this year. They open with Texas, probably #1 vs.#2, with both teams using first year starting QB'S.
Be ready to go day 1 and teams will be fine.

Yep, if college football can avoid the gross money grab that is pre-season football, the NFL can and should.

How is the Oline supposed to gel without live snaps in game situations?

I'm a firm believer in the starters getting some snaps in PS games
Might see them for a drive or two. The defense will give them a workout in camp.

It’s not college football, any given Sunday the worse can beat the best with a turnover! We’ve seen it happen, not rare.
Cards were suppose to be ready last year, but were inconsistent without continuity throughout the season. Andy Reid is a great coach but Tom Landry had a winning season for 30 years straight, Vince Lombardi won on excellent execution of the same run play, over and over.
Don Shula won perfect with a run formula, and back up in the playoffs, lost with best pure passer ever.

It takes 4 games for modern team to figure out, what should be established in the NFL preseason. That’s why I was trained with live bullets in the army. Pre traumatic stress deployment.
