Jaylen Brown has made a career off proving his doubters wrong. Some fans of the Boston Celtics fans booed him on draft night a decade ago, and then he eventually won them over by helping the Green Team reach the playoffs in every season of his 10-year tenure. During that span he also captured NBA Finals MVP en route to a championship in 2024, yet it wasn't enough to keep him in green and white for good.
In early July, the Celtics traded Brown to the rival Philadelphia 76ers as part of a blockbuster deal that stunned the NBA world. The five-time All-Star reportedly never asked for a move, so he wasn't thrilled that the Celtics sent him packing after a strong season in which he finished sixth in MVP voting. Brown reiterated how he felt slighted by the Celtics on his Twitch stream on Monday night and said it's made his hunger for a championship stronger than ever.
"I want to win more than I ever have, and maybe it's for obvious reasons," he said in front of a virtual audience of thousands. "I feel like I’ve been a little bit disrespected in this process from people that I thought valued me and everything I brought to the team and the city...So, I want to win more than anything."
Heading into the 2025-26 campaign, many thought the Celtics would fail with Brown at the helm and fellow Celtics star Jayson Tatum injured for several months. However, Brown averaged a career-high 28.7 points per game and Boston ended up in second place in the Eastern Conference.
This success story didn't have a happy ending for the Celtics, though. They were eliminated in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs by Brown's new team: the Sixers. How much that series influenced Boston's decision to part ways with Brown is hard to quantify.
Regardless, the ex-Celtic finds himself back in championship contention with Philly, as the Sixers roster homegrown stars in Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey and added four-time NBA champion and future Hall of Famer LeBron James into the fold via a two-year, $8 million contract.
"I'm looking forward to that journey, that approach, the leadership, that sacrifice, and whatever it's going to take," Brown described of chasing wins with the 76ers.
