First Base Umpire Explains Red Sox's Willson Contreras Ejection originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Monday night, picking up their fifth straight win, but Willson Contreras was ejected from the game.
Contreras homered in the first inning, putting the Red Sox up 3-0 early. The homer came with a bat flip and an emotional moment in the dugout. Contreras comes from Venezuela, and like many Venezuelan players, he is grieving after an earthquake hit his home country.

Contreras was ejected in the bottom of the second inning after striking out on a check-swing call. On his way back to the dugout, he tapped his head, signaling that he felt the call was wrong and would challenge it if he could. First base umpire Nic Lentsz took offense to that and tossed him from the game.

Lentz explained his decision to eject Contreras after the game.
“I called him out on appeal for the check swing, and as he was walking back to the dugout, he started gesturing, tapping his helmet, like he wanted to challenge something that is not a challengeable call," said Lentz to a pool reporter, via Christopher Smith. "And so disrespect, and again gesturing towards what he thought was an incorrect call, got him removed from the game.”
