STARKVILLE — It wasn't 26-0 like the last time Mississippi State baseball played Lipscomb in March, but the Bulldogs still notched a convincing win over the Bisons to start the NCAA Tournament.
MSU (41-17), the No. 14 seed and hosts of the Starkville Regional, hammered Lipscomb 10-1 at Dudy Noble Field on May 29. It was nearly MSU’s first shutout in an NCAA Tournament game since it beat Vanderbilt in the 2021 national championship game until Lipscomb hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth.
Duke Stone gave Mississippi State an excellent pitching start, while Jacob Parker and Gehrig Frei both hit home runs.
Mississippi State will play either No. 2 Cincinnati or No. 3 Louisiana on May 30 (8 p.m., TBA) with a chance to reach the Starkville Regional final.
Stone didn't have much trouble at all against Lipscomb (29-25).
The sophomore right-hander pitched six shutout innings, allowing only three hits and no walks. It tied the longest outing of his career, and his 10 strikeouts were the second most of his career.
Lipscomb had one double and two singles against Stone.
Tyler Pitzer shut out Lipscomb in the seventh and eighth innings with one hit and one walk, then Jack Gleason closed the game in the ninth inning.

Lipscomb starting pitcher Alexander Llinas threw five shutout innings against Mississippi State on March 5. He had the MSU batters in check again in the beginning of his NCAA Tournament start.
The Bulldogs only reached base once through the first three innings. It wasn't until the fourth inning when they were able to take a 3-0 lead. Parker hit an RBI single, then Reed Stallman hit a two-run single.
Parker also hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Mississippi State chased Llinas in the seventh inning when Frei was hit by a pitch and then Ace Reese drew a walk with no outs. That kickstarted a five-run inning, and Llinas left charged with six runs.
