STARKVILLE — Alexander Llinas did well as the Lipscomb baseball starting pitcher in his first game against Mississippi State at Dudy Noble Field.

That was on March 5, when he pitched five scoreless innings before the Bulldogs finally scored on him in an 8-3 win.

So, it was no surprise that he got the start May 29 in the first game of the Starkville Regional in the NCAA Tournament against MSU at Dudy Noble Field. He had another strong start, and was left with a memorable moment, even though Mississippi State won 10-1.

Llinas was pulled from the game in the seventh inning, when MSU (41-17) was ahead only 4-0. The crowd of 10,470 fans recognized that he pitched well enough to keep the Bisons (29-25) in striking distance.

So, he received a standing ovation as he walked back to the dugout, not just from Lipscomb fans, but Mississippi State fans, too.

"It was one of the coolest moments ever," said Llinas, a senior who's also played for Nicholls State and Nova Southeastern. "This is one of the best places to play in baseball. 15,000 to 16,000 people, the weight of the crowd, it was just a surreal moment. That was a pretty cool part."

Two Mississippi State runners were on base when Llinas was pulled after a hit by pitch and a walk. Those two players came around to score as part of a five-run inning, which made Llinas' stat line look not super impressive.

But Jeff Forehand, the Lipscomb coach for 20 seasons, said he was proud of Llinas' pitching. He was tagged for six runs in six innings with seven hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

"For a soldout crowd to give a standing ovation to the other team, that's what makes this place so cool and so special," Forehand said. "I hate that they won the game, but for an old guy that's been around a long time, that's what our game is about."
