Tavis Honeycutt starred down what he hopes is one of the 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) ballparks he’ll see in the coming years Friday.
The Newberry native and 2027 Florida baseball commit competed in the MLB High School Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park – home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Unfortunately, Honeycutt didn’t advance to Monday’s final, but it was still a debut to remember. Honeycutt came in fourth place with 17 total home runs.
Brady Cummingham, a Texas A&M commit from Illinois, and Sullivan Reed, Mississippi State commit from the Magnolia State earned spots in the final – held during the MLB Home Run Derby which includes former Florida baseball star Jac Caglianone.
Honeycutt was tied for second after the two minute and 30 second first round with 13 home runs after hitting last.
However, he hit just four home runs in the one minute and 30 second round two.
This put him at 17, three behind Cunningham and six behind Reed.
Last weekend, Honeycutt competed in the Perfect Game National Showcase at LoanDepot Park in Miami – home of the Marlins.
Prior to the derby, Honeycutt told the Sun that his invite was “unreal.”
“You get the chance to hit with the pro guys, and you watch them on TV every day and see all the work they do, and it’s like I’m really not that far,” Honeycutt said. “It’s a learning experience no matter what.”
Kinon Bastian, fellow 2027 Gators commit, finished tied for seventh with 13 home runs, He blasted 10 in the first round and three in the second.
Bastian, from Orlando’s First Academy, is the brother of Jadan Bastian. Jadan, a redshirt junior, transferred from Jacksonville and was expected to make an impact for UF in 2026. However, he suffered a severe right leg injury in a fall scrimmage that kept him out all season.
