The Hawaii Hilo softball team will open the NCAA Division II Championships West Regional Round today at 9 a.m. against Cal State San Marcos in San Marcos, Calif.
The Vulcans and Cougars are in a four-team, double-elimination sub-regional along with Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills, who will face each other today at noon. The entire tournament field includes 64 teams.
Hawaii Hilo, which is making its seventh NCAA postseason appearance, finished fourth in last week’s PacWest Tournament.
10 local tennis players make the grade
Five University of Hawaii tennis players and five others from Hawaii Hilo and Chaminade were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
Adriano Dzhenev and Timothy Li were honored from the UH men’s team, and Allaire Berl, Makeilah Nepomuceno and Sophie Rachor made it for the UH women.
At the D-II level, Hawaii Hilo men’s players Iori Furuhata and Jaime Paquet, and Vulcan women’s player Victoria Ricaurte-Cabas earned recognition. Selena Buttery and Isabella Minaudo of the Chaminade women’s team were honored.
To qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.50 cumulative grade point average or better, be at least a sophomore and participated in 90 percent of the team’s matches during the season.
