Memphis football coach Charles Huff has had only about a week and a half to see his new team in an actual practice environment, but that doesn't mean he hasn't learned anything.
Huff said March 30 that he already has seen a group of players separate themselves with consistent play. That's not to say a depth chart is set in stone — spring practice will continue until April 18, and there'll be plenty more time to sort out position battles in the summer — but Huff's comments are an indication of where things stand.
"We have a philosophy just from a measurement standpoint, we want to try to get guys to be 70 to 80% successful in practice and then 10 to 15% of failure rate," Huff said. "We want to balance it. We want to expose them enough, or put them in situations where they do fail, because that allows for growth. But we don't want them failing too much, because then they won't try to improve."
Here's an overview of who Huff said has stood out so far. While it's too early to project a depth chart, and there are plenty of players he didn't mention who will probably play significant roles, it's nonetheless an interesting peek at the first week of Memphis practice.
On the defensive line, Huff mentioned Southern Miss transfers J'Mond Tapp, Elijah Kinsler and Jaden McKinney, as well as Indiana transfer J'Mari Monette, Mississippi State transfer Joe Head Jr. and returners Taylor Burton and Jacari Gatling.
At linebacker, he pointed to Southern Miss transfer Mike Montgomery and returners Wolf Walker and Tylon Nash. He said the staff is moving players around multiple positions to see where they fit best.
In the secondary, Huff mentioned Southern Miss transfers Ian Foster, Anthony Richard Jr. and Ahmere Foster, plus returner Chauncey Logan, Austin Peay transfer Ellis Ellis Jr. and Wofford transfer Darius Malcolm Jr.
Huff said all three quarterbacks competing for the starting job — West Florida transfer Marcus Stokes, South Carolina transfer Air Noland and Southern Miss transfer Denzel Gardner — have shown flashes.
"I know it sounds cliche, but all three of them will have a moment where you're like, 'Wow, big-time throw, big-time read,' " he said. "And then they'll turn around and have a play where you're like, 'Were you here yesterday?' "
At running back, Huff discussed Southern Miss transfer Jaylin Carter, Cincinnati transfer Manny Covey, Colorado transfer Dallan Hayden and freshman Jordan Thompson. He didn't single out any tight ends, but said there are "three or four" who have played well so far.
At wide receiver, Huff brought up Colorado transfer Terrell Timmons, Southern Miss transfers Tychaun Chapman and Jermane Hayes, Michigan State transfer Alante Brown and Kansas State transfer Jemyri Davis.
