When Charles Huff took over as Memphis football coach in late 2025, he made it immediately clear that he'd prioritize local recruiting in the Memphis area.
That paid off over the weekend.
The Tigers got their first local commit of the 2027 class on June 14 when Germantown cornerback Malik Dean committed. Huff now has four commits in the 2027 class.
While Memphis has been busy throughout the spring and summer on the recruiting trail, the Tigers likely won't take as many high school recruits as they have over the past few years. Former coach Ryan Silverfield routinely put together high school classes with 20 or more recruits, but Huff has said that number will be likely be lower as Memphis focuses its efforts on the transfer portal in offseason recruiting.
Here's a look at where the class stands heading into the rest of the summer.
Memphis' first commit of the 2027 class came at the game's most important position. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Tisdale also had offers from Cincinnati, Wake Forest and more.
Tisdale plays for Heard County High School in Franklin, Georgia.
Luther is a 6-5, 300-pound offensive lineman from Pontotoc High School in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He's ranked as a three-star recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite. He's the No. 41 player in Mississippi.
Luther had multiple power conference offers, including from Arkansas, Virginia Tech and Colorado.
Dean visited Memphis and committed shortly thereafter. He had also visited Western Kentucky.
The 6-2, 180-pound Dean also had offers from UNLV, Southern Miss, Jacksonville State and more.
Johnson had offers from Miami (FL), Tulane and more. He committed to Memphis on June 14. He's a 6-2, 185-pound receiver from North Shore High School in Houston.
