Harry Kane has admitted he wondered if he would ever win a trophy, before his Bayern Munich side wrapped up the Bundesliga title at the weekend.
“I’m very aware of the fact that I hadn’t won [a trophy],” Kane told the Timesand Guardianafter a 2-0 win against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday when the England captain held silverware aloft for the first time in his career.
“As the years go by you start to think: ‘Is it going to happen?’ I just credit my resilience because of the things I’ve had to deal with in my career; you just keep going and keep pushing yourself and good things will come and this is definitely one of those.”
In getting the monkey off his back, the prolific striker also spoke of his admiration for Rory McIlroy, the golfer who had spent over a decade trying to win the Masters and so achieve a career grand slam of major titles. Having finally banished his own hoodoo, Kane voiced appreciation of of the Northern Irishman coming through a play-off against his friend Justin Rose, saying “part of me wanted Rory to win because you saw the emotions he went through. It’s a weight on the shoulders”.
However, Kane also spoke of his hunger to achieve more, adding in his interview that there are still plenty of team trophies he wants to win and that he is not prepared to head off into the sunset having finally lifted a trophy.
After the league title win with Bayern alongside his former Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Eric Dier, the England captain talked of how special a moment it was, adding that although the pair did not win any titles with Spurs he was very proud of what they had experienced at the club over the years.
