Don’t expect Brad Galloway’s status as Harbor Creek’s boys swimming and diving coach to be a one-season deal.

“I’ve got three sons (who swim),” the 2002 graduate said, “so I’m going to be here awhile.”

Although Galloway was vague about his tenure, it won’t cover 43 years.

That’s how long the late Maxine Lundberg, whom Galloway once called coach, was fully or partially in charge of the Huskies’ aquatics program.

Lundberg, a 2024 Erie County Aquatic Hall of Fame inductee, died last April 28. The 1973 Harbor Creek graduate was 69.

The Huskies faced Girard on Jan. 5. A moment of silence in Lundberg’s honor was held before the first home dual of their 2025-26 season.

Harbor Creek’s boys won 118-28 and its girls 108-67.

Also on hand for the ceremony was Dana Mason, who resigned as the Huskies’ girls coach shortly after Lundberg’s death.

Harbor Creek’s current season is its first since 1993 minus the collective leadership of Mason and Lundberg.

Galloway said he and Bryan Lee, a 2001 graduate, originally applied to strictly coach Harbor Creek’s boys. However, that changed when Mason resigned.

Lee is now in charge of the girls for Harbor Creek, a rare PIAA school that employs separate swimming/diving coaches per gender.

“We love being back here in orange and black” Galloway said. “It’s a delight to follow ‘Max.’ It’s a big legacy, but it’s great we get to carry on this tradition.”

Huskies seek permanent honor

Harbor Creek diver Kyra Guntrum and swimmer Isaac Smith stood at attention during the moment of silence for Lundberg.

The juniors, though, didn’t want such formalities to end there.

Guntrum and Smith are among the current Huskies who have openly lobbied school personnel to formally rename its natatorium after Lundberg.

“That would be awesome,” Guntrum said. “Coach spent so much time here that she deserves her name on the wall.”

Smith said he took to Harbor Creek's pool in part because Lundberg loved to track the times of potential swimmers through the Eastside YMCA’s youth aquatics.

“Coach was right on my back once I got here,” Smith said. “She pushed me to do better every single lap, even when I thought I wasn’t capable of doing that.

“She helped me realize my potential.”
