The Girard baseball team seemed destined for a big win throughout the afternoon at Mercyhurst University.

Whether it was throwing a no-hitter through five innings or making a comeback in the sixth inning, the YellowJackets were ready to tell an exciting story in the District 10 Class 3A baseball quarterfinals.

It was Ryan St. Julien that decided to author that story.

With Levi Potter representing the winning run on second base, St. Julien went with an outside pitch and dropped it down the right-field line for a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 4-3 win over Franklin on May 19.

“I had to be patient and wait for the pitch that I wanted and to stay through it,” St. Julien said. “I just hoped it stayed fair with the wind blowing.”

St. Julien’s heroics put Girard (12-6) in the D-10 semifinals for the second year in a row. The YellowJackets take on Sharon on May 22 at a site and time to be determined, while Franklin ends the season 11-10.

“We had to persevere and stay in this game,” said Girard coach John Tramontano. “Victor did a great job throwing the ball and later in the game when Potter was on second base I knew a hit would do it. We had the right guys in the right places at the right times.”

Girard turned to Victor Gould on the mound, while Franklin started Nate Fezell. The two were locked in a pitcher’s duel for most of the afternoon. The Knights didn’t get their first hit until Ian Higley reached on an infield single with one out in the sixth inning. Nolan Parry followed with a base hit before Luke Marsteller lifted an inside-the-park home run to right-center to give Franklin a 3-1 lead.

Girard had just one hit through five innings, but the YellowJackets rallied to tie the game at three in the sixth. St. Julien and Joe Ferretti hit back-to-back singles before a wild pitch put them on second and third. Mason Kalicky’s groundball was booted, allowing a run to score before a Sam Schepers double tied the game.

“We’ve battled in a lot of games and this team has had great energy and doesn’t get down,” said Tramontano. “This is two years in a row getting a playoff win and it shows the guys we can compete with anyone with hard work.”

Fairview holds off Conneaut

Robert Benford allowed one hit in four shutout innings of relief as Fairview swept Conneaut with a 3-1 win in the District 10 Class 3A baseball quarterfinals on May 19 at Mercyhurst University.

Fairview (14-1) will take on Titusville in the D-10 semifinals on May 22 at a site and time to be determined, while Conneaut ends the season 5-10.

The Tigers led 2-1 after three innings and brought in Benford to shut the door.

“I just got after them and threw strikes,” Benford said. “It’s all competitiveness. We have a veteran outfield and the guys made great plays.”

Fairview took an early 1-0 lead on an error before Benford put down a sacrifice bunt to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Fairview tacked on a run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch while the pitching staff dominated throughout the game.

Sharon, Titusville win in 3A quarterfinals

Dalton Knapp and Blake Schmidt combined to throw a three-hit shutout for Titusville as the Rockets beat Northwestern 2-0 at Allegheny College.

Knapp struck out five and allowed three hits over four innings to get the win before Schmidt shut the door in the final three innings for the save. Coy Campbell and Wyatt Obert each drove in a run for Titusville (8-10).

Coen Fertig and Ian Fischer each drove in three runs on two hits, while Santino Gavin clubbed a home run as Sharon beat Corry 11-4 at Slippery Rock University. The Tigers (13-6) move on to the semifinals against Girard.

Harbor Creek, Hickory move on in 4A playoffs

Breckon Kitts struck out six in a one-hit shutout as Harbor Creek beat Slippery Rock 1-0 in the District 10 Class 4A baseball quarterfinals at Allegheny College.

Harbor Creek (11-8) moves on to the D-10 semifinals on May 22 against Cathedral Prep, while Slippery Rock ends the season 12-5.

Lucas Hanson had an RBI with a sacrifice fly for the Huskies in the sixth inning while Kitts did the rest.

Hickory (7-13) outslugged Grove City (15-6) 11-10 in the Class 4A quarterfinals at Slippery Rock University. Dante Evans and Luke Lewis each drove in two runs for the Hornets, while Jack White had three hits.
