North Carolina further bolstered its frontcourt by landing 7-foot Greek forward Alexandros Samodurov, who chose the Tar Heels over remaining in the NBA draft.

The 21-year-old plays for Panathinaikos in both the Greek Basketball League and EuroLeague and becomes the third international addition to UNC’s roster for next season.

Samodurov averaged 5.1 points and 1.7 rebounds in 29 combined games for Panathinaikos this season, shooting 76.9% on 2-point attempts and 26.7% from 3-point range (8-for-30).

Last summer, he appeared in FIBA EuroBasket with the Greek national team, averaging 4.9 points and 4.6 blocked shots in nine games. He shot 58.3% from 3-point range (7-for-12) in that event and also went 5-for-19 from beyond the arc (26.3%) in other competition.

Samodurov has an indirect tie to Chapel Hill as a longtime friend of guard Neoklis Avdalas, who joined North Carolina earlier this offseason via the transfer portal from Virginia Tech. The two played together for Panathinaikos during the 2022-23 season.

He is the third international player the Tar Heels have added to next season’s roster, joining Avdalas and French forward Sayon Keita.
