I mean, traditionally in a sound 3-4 defense your DE is playing a five-technique, which is actually better from a pass-rushing perspective. But many people believe that interior pressure is more valuable in today's NFL than edge pressure (which is why New England keeps letting interior rushers leave).

I guess Aaron Donald just played in an imaginary position last season. 3-4 defenses are adapting due to the shift sending pressure up the middle instead of just the edge.
