It’s time to start preparing for the 2026 Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get to know a lot of new faces for Year 3 of the Fran Brown Era.

Name: Calvin Russell III
Position: Wide Receiver
Year: Freshman
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 195 lbs
Hometown: Opa Locka, FL
High Schools: Miami Northwestern/Rise Prep Academy
2025 stats: Russell caught 47 passes for 742 yards and eight touchdowns during his senior year at Miami Northwestern.
2026 projections: Achilles injuries are tough to judge. Steve Angeli has had a long offseason to rehab and properly get ready for the season. The report is, with the new NCAA 5-in-5 eligibility rule now in effect, that Russell will try to play this season. Is that feasible for an injury that required surgery at the end of March/beginning of April? It will certainly be exciting to see whenever one of Syracuse football’s highest ever rated recruits finally steps onto the gridiron, repping the Orange Block S.
How’d he get here?: Syracuse earned Russell’s commitment over a loaded top eight, which included Miami, Oregon, Florida, LSU, North Carolina, Florida State and Michigan. Notably, Michigan pushed for Russell hard until early signing day, as reports were that the Wolverines were also offering the opportunity to play basketball in addition to football, like Russell is doing at Syracuse.
What’d recruiting sites say?: A five-star recruit by 247Sports, a four-star recruit everywhere else. 247Sports have Russell as the third-best wide receiver in the class, while ESPN rated him the fourth-best wide receiver.

Interesting nugget o’interest: Russell’s basketball interest probably comes from his mom, Chanivia Broussard. She’s a member of the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
