The Syracuse Orange had one of the biggest wins of the 2026 recruiting cycle when they landed 5-star wide receiver Calvin Russell over the likes of the Miami Hurricanes, Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, and Oregon Ducks.
However, they suffered a significant blow earlier this week when it was announced that Russell suffered a significant leg injury in spring practice and is expected to miss the majority of his freshman season.
According to Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, Russell is out indefinitely.
“I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players, and the relationship Calvin, his family, and I have," Brown said in a statement. "Calvin, Best believe Orange Nation’s got your back!”
According to On3's Pete Nakos, a return late in the 2026 season has not been ruled out yet.
Russell stands at 6-foot-5, 195 pounds, and was rated as the No. 31 overall player and No. 3 WR in the 2026 class. As a Miami native, it was relatively surprising to see him pick the Orange over schools down south, but he followed Brown up north and is expected to be a major piece of their offense moving forward, once he is healthy.
