German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann wanted to see a response from his team after Curaçao knotted Sunday’s game at 1-1.
Sure, there was little doubt that Germany would be able to pull out a win (the game ended 7-1 in favor of the Germans), but Nagelsmann loved how his defenders rallied around each other — particularly bench players Waldemar Anton and Antonio Rüdiger.
“I want to single out Waldemar Anton and Toni Rüdiger. The way they pushed Nico Schlotterbeck after the goal was crucial. That’s the spirit. Even though he’s their competitor. That’s the key,” Nagelsmann said (as captured by Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg. “You need a good group. A strong connection. Talent doesn’t hurt either. We have that. If you put all of that together, you can have a good tournament.”
The German national team’s backline is a work in progress, but the Curaçao victory was a good start to the tournament. Hopefully, that team mentality will help carry the group through tough times as the games get more difficult.
