OMAHA, Neb. — Georgia baseball’s first College World Series game in 18 years arrives Saturday night.
The No. 3 seeded Bulldogs get a formidable test right out of the gate at Charles Schawb Field when it faces No. 6 seeded Texas.
“We’re built for this moment and we’re going to Omaha to do it,” Georgia pitcher Justin Byrd said. “We’re not just going to Omaha to say we’re going to Omaha. We’re going to actually do it and play and take home the championship.”
Texas (45-13) swept Georgia (51-12) in three games last season in Austin.
Georgia coach Wes Johnson said outfielder Aiden Robins (.342, 24 homers, 64 RBI) and catcher Carson Tinney (.333, 22 homers, 58 RBI) at the top of Texas’ lineup bring power and don’t swing and miss much.
“I do like some matchups as we move through the lineup,” he said. “Not saying we are getting them out, but just saying, OK, their first two hitters are real.”
Texas will have to contend with a Georgia lineup that leads the nation with 174 homers.
“I think the key to getting any good hitter out is to go throw strike one,” Texas lefty pitcher Luke Harrison said. “And I think that's the main focus for us, is control what we can control. And we know that our pitching staff, we've got plenty good enough stuff to get those guys out.”
