OMAHA, Neb. — Georgia baseball may have a hard time coming up with an encore to follow its College World Series opening game win over Texas, but the Bulldogs will try to get past another former Big 12 team who now resides in the SEC in Oklahoma.
The second game for the Bulldogs (52-12) comes against a team that has won their last three games by a combined 30-3.
“All the guys in the box, if you're a head coach on the other team you've got to be scared of nine guys,” Oklahoma catcher Deiten LaChance said. “I mean, everybody can do everything.”
Oklahoma (39-22) shut out Alabama 9-0 Saturday after routing Kansas in two games of the Lawrence Super Regional.
“They like to swing early and move the baseball,” said Georgia coach Wes Johnson who called the Sooner offense underrated. “They’re really, really fast. They steal a lot of bases.”
It’s a battle of Branch brothers: shortstop Kolby for Georgia vs. second baseman Kyle for Oklahoma.
It’s also a matchup of Georgia’s Caden Aoki who has 46 career starts during a five-year college career against Oklahoma freshman Xander Mercurius who will be making his fourth start.
Aoki allowed one run and struck out 11 while walking one over six innings in an Athens Regional win over Liberty and threw a career-high 121 pitches in 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs with a walk and nine strikeouts in the 11-9 win over Mississippi State to win the super regional.
“I’m just going to take my confidence and desire and go out there and do what I do,” Aoki said.
