Georgia baseball has won all five games against Mississippi State this season.
If the No. 3 national seed makes it six for six on Sunday, it will be on its way to the College World Series.
“Both teams know each team’s secrets now after five,” Georgia coach Wes Johnson said. “We’re not going to fool anybody. It’s really coming down to who can execute the most pitches at a certain time in the game. I tell our guys all the time, toughness for me is just your capable of great endurance. (Sunday) could be very similar. I don’t know if it will be as high scoring.”
Georgia’s 13-12 win on Saturday in the best-of-three series was the most runs it’s allowed in an NCAA Tournament win in program history.
“We’re right there,” Mississippi State coach Brian O’Connor said. “There’s no consolation prizes. We don’t look at it as you’ve got to get over the hump against Georgia. It’s a baseball game. Our guys aren’t looking at them, saying, ‘Ooh my gosh, how do we do this?’” he said. “They’re just playing the game. We just didn’t do enough on the mound executing.”
No. 14 seed Mississippi State (43-18) used five pitchers, but may have to call on relievers a second day in a row perhaps except for Jack Bauer who gave up 3 runs and 4 hits in 1 2/3 innings.
“Obviously, you can’t feel great,” O’Connor said of the state of his bullpen. “We just couldn’t hold them down. …We’ll pour everything into (Sunday) and do whatever it takes to win.”
Georgia (50-12) gets back one of its top players, third baseman Tre Phelps, after a one-game NCAA suspension.
Johnson indicated Michael O’Shaughnessy will still be in the lineup along with Phelps after hitting three homers in the last two games.
“He’s going to bring the Tre Phelps energy,” O’Shaughnessy said. “It’s unique. It’s been like that all year. He brings an energy to the team that everybody feeds off of.”
