France steps up security measures ahead of World Cup match v Morocco

France is beefing up security ahead of Thursday night's World Cup quarter-final match against Morocco in the United States.

The interior ministry said that all security forces will be present to ensure that the match in Foxborough will be a celebration back at home while at the same time acting with full force against troublemakers.

Around 2.2 million Moroccans or people of Moroccan descent live in France. The match is a rematch of the 2022 semi-final which France won.

Carrying weapons or pyrotechnics is outlawed in Paris and its metropolitan area while in the southern department of Aude the sale and consumption of alcohol in public places has been prohibited, also in connection with the current heatwave.

With the kick-off at 10pm (2000 GMT) in France, Paris has extended opening hours for outdoor bars and and restaurants until 2am. Its owners have agreed not to sell alcohol to take away and to provide water for free to customers.

The capital has also banned cars in the popular Marais area between 8pm and 2pm to make the experience safer for fans.
