The World Cup is a gift that keeps giving.
Fans at Boston Stadium saw the frantic excitement of the Scots, the brilliance of Erling Haaland, Paraguay make history, the might of France and the upcoming power of Morocco. And now those last two nations close Boston Stadium’s doors with a quarterfinal date on Thursday, July 9.
The final match of this tournament in Foxboro welcomes Kylian Mbappé and Achraf Hakimi back to a familiar field. Mbappé supplied two assists, aiding his Golden Boot race, in a 4-1 blistering of Norway in group play. And Morocco doused Scotland’s party with a 1-0 victory in Group C.
France is backed to win the match — its 14 goals top the table — in a rematch of the 2022 semifinals. The French booked their championship appearance with a 2-0 triumph vs. Morocco in that meeting.
Match start time is set for 4 p.m. at Boston Stadium, aka Gillete Stadium.
Morocco’s in clear defensive form with two shutouts across its five cup games. It hasn’t lost in this tournament with a draw against Brazil, which reached the Round of 16, being the lone slip in group play. A penalty-kick victory over Netherlands led to a 3-0 dusting of Canada in the Round of 16. The Moroccan side, which made history in 2022 as the first African nation to reach the semifinals, is trending in the right direction before another knockout match with France.
Morocco carries over five yellow cards from the Canada and Netherland matches, including bookings for Hakimi and Issa Diop. France has three bookings, all from the 1-0 victory over Paraguay, as Bradley Barcola, Michael Olise andManu Koné earned cards. A second yellow card on Thursday would mean ejection from the match.
Mbappé lifted France against Paraguay with his penalty kick in the 70th minute. He’s been every bit of the star that splashed in his World Cup debut leading France to the title at 19 years old. He scored four times in that tournament and already has seven in this trip with a pair of assists. A Golden Boot might be added to the trophy case, pending the continued genius of Haaland and Lionel Messi, as France searches for its third straight World Cup final.
Bill Koch: Sideshow nonsense was all Paraguay could offer while trying to nullify France in the Round of 16. Les Bleus were never in any danger. Morocco has been pushed much harder in its two knockout games to date, and that could help to finally slow them here. France 2, Morocco 0.
Jacob Rousseau: Morocco’s run in 2022 was a great story as the first African nation to reach the semifinals. France ended that run with goal from Theo Hernández in the first five minutes. I’m expecting a similar result as France aims to undo its second-place finish in the 2022 tournament. France 2, Morocco 0.
