Former Washington Huskies star Braiden Ward has put together a very strong season in AAA with the Worcester Red Sox.
After setting an MLB Spring Training record with 19 stolen bases, he's been able to carry that momentum into the regular season both at the plate and in the field. At the plate, Ward put together a strong day on Thursday, June 4, in a 5-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
He's also put together a stellar defensive year while playing all three spots in the outfield, with no errors and a pair of assists across 82 chances, including several highlight reel plays.
On the year, Ward has put together a .240 batting average and a .393 on-base percentage with 31 hits, 19 walks, and 23 runs scored, while his 27 stolen bases lead the International League. However, he doesn't appear anywhere close to a call-up from the Red Sox.
Even with young star Roman Anthony on the injured list with a finger injury, Boston has a logjam of outfielders between Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida, making it difficult to find a spot for Ward on the big league club. As the Red Sox continue to struggle, he could become an intriguing piece at the trade deadline, or he may move up the list of call-up options if one or two of the outfielders ahead of him are dealt.
If Ward's success gets him called up at any point, it would be his MLB debut.
