After Texas A&M coach Mike Elko's first season at the helm, three of the Aggies' top defenders were selected in the first and second rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft, led by ascending Edge Shemar Stewart going 17th overall to the Cincinnati Bengals. On Day 2, former Purdue transfer defensive end and Bryan (TX) native Nic Scourton was selected 51st overall by the Carolina Panthers, looking like one of several "steals" in the second round.
After playing at a heavier weight last season, Scourton dropped over 20 pounds to get back to his lighter frame, hoping to regain his fluidity as a pass rusher, which seemingly paid off during his rookie season with the Panthers after appearing in all 17 games during the 2025 NFL season, recording 47 tackles and a team-high five sacks paired with seven tackles for loss.
After starting eight of 17 games last season, Scourton entered the offseason with plenty of momentum, looking to earn the starting outside linebacker job during training camp, which officially began on Thursday. In years past, injuries have been an issue during the first few days of camp for most NFL teams, as it's been reported and confirmed that Nic Scourton was carted off with an apparent lower-body injury.
According to NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe, Scourton was injured during team drills on Thursday and was reportedly in tears after being taken out on a cart, which, on the surface, could mean his 2026 season has ended before it began. Avoiding speculation, we will keep you updated whenever new information regarding Scourton's injury status is released.
