Heath Evans won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints, but his career didn't start in black and gold. Before he was catching passes from Drew Brees the fullback was blocking for Tom Brady. Not many guys can say they shared the huddle with two future Hall of Famers, but Evans can. A third-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks back in 2001, Evans playing alongside Brady on the New England Patriots from 2005 to 2008 before ending his career with a two-year run in New Orleans during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. But how were the two quarterbacks different?
"Brady would grab you by the throat. If you messed up around him, you got scared. Fast. He was going to let you know," Evans wrote on his official Twitter account. "But then came the massive encouragement. The ‘follow me.’ And life got breathed into you. Brees was the constant encourager. No chokehold. Just relentless belief in the men around him."
As for what they had in common? Evans wrote "They studied like heart surgeons with a man’s life in their hands. They sacrificed personal stats when the team needed a run instead of a pass. They prepared Monday through Saturday so they could dominate on Sunday. The style matters less than the sacrifice. Most men want to lead. Few are willing to pay the price preparation demands."
Evans learned a lot from his time with two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. They say that discipline looks like obsession to those who lack it, and the rigorous training regimens both Brees and Brady held themselves to might prove it. While he wasn't willing to say which approach was better, Evans did see the value in both of them, and he obviously has too much respect for both quarterbacks to give on the nod over the other. So we'll do it for him: Brees going 5-3 against Brady (including the playoffs) is all the proof you need.
