Louisville’s success with transfer quarterbacks factored into Lincoln Kienholz's decision to pick the Cardinals out of the portal earlier this year.
“That’s something I took into account when I was making my decision,” he told reporters at ACC media days on July 16.
Kienholz, who spent three years at Ohio State and was the backup to Julian Sayin last fall, is in line to be the fourth transfer in four years to start behind center for coach Jeff Brohm.
Jack Plummer and Tyler Shough were both 3,000-yard passers in their years with the Cardinals, in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Shough was an honorable mention All-ACC selection and was taken in the second round of the NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints.
Miller Moss threw for 2,679 yards and 16 touchdowns last year.
“Just how well Coach Brohm does with quarterbacks is something that’s going to help me out for years to come,” Kienholz said.
Brohm, who was also a quarterback at Louisville in the early 1990s and later played seven years in the NFL, established a reputation for his development of the position while at Purdue, molding David Blough and Aidan O'Connell into NFL quarterbacks as well.
Kienholz appeared in 10 games at Ohio State and threw for 250 yards and one touchdown between 2023 and 2025.
The Buckeyes sought to use his mobility last season in short-yardage situations, where he ran for touchdowns against Minnesota and Purdue.
While Kienholz never won the starting job with the Buckeyes, finishing behind Sayin in a competition last August, he found his experience in the program valuable, shaping his approach as he watched Will Howard as well as Sayin.
“The leadership, the time they put in, trying to be perfect in every aspect,” Kienholz said, “that’s something they pushed on themselves and the coaches pushed. The quarterback room in general would try to be perfect in every single aspect of the game. I feel like the past three years, learning from those guys, is going to help me this year.”
Kienholz has two more years of eligibility left after he redshirted as a freshman in 2023.
