The football world is full of unlikely reunions.
However, rarely do two former NFL colleagues reunite as political opponents in one of the country's most competitive congressional races.
That's exactly what's unfolding in Arizona.
Former New York Jets kicker Jay Feely and Dr. Amish Shah, who once served as a team physician for the organization, are expected to face one another in November. That comes about after each emerged victorious in their respective primary elections for Arizona's 1st Congressional District:
Feely's and Shah's paths first crossed during the kicker's two seasons in New York in 2008 and 2009. At the time.
Every NFL team relies on medical professionals behind the scenes, but few fans ever know their names. Shah was one of those individuals, working alongside players and coaches while helping ensure their safety throughout the season. Feely, meanwhile, handled kicking duties for the Jets before continuing a career that spanned six NFL franchises, including four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
Despite now standing on opposite sides of a congressional race, there appears to be no lingering animosity between the former Jets colleagues. Speaking after his primary victory, Feely acknowledged the connection, saying of Shah, "It's an old relationship." via ESPN.
Before it was clear who his Democratic opponent would be, Feely added that he wanted to "do this the right way" and "run this the right way," signaling a respectful approach to the campaign despite the political differences that separate the two candidates.
