‘I Don’t Have Time’ — Hockey Hall of Famer Turns Down Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA’s Approach For Congressional Run

Jeremy Roenick has no shortage of things keeping him busy.

The Hockey Hall of Famer recently turned down an approach from Turning Point USA to run for Congress, saying he simply does not have enough time for another major responsibility.

Hockey Hall of Famer Rejects Opportunity For Congressional Run​

Roenick was viewed as a potential candidate for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, a competitive seat that opened after Republican Rep. David Schweikert decided to run for governor rather than seek re-election.

The former NHL star was a recognizable figure in Arizona after spending five seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes. His popularity and high profile made him an attractive option for a political campaign.

However, Roenick ultimately decided against the idea.

“I don’t have time in my life to have another job or responsibility. I’m running three companies and have a paid job and I’m a [Chicago] Blackhawks ambassador!” Roenick said via text message on Tuesday morning to Cronkite News.

The Republican primary concluded on July 21, with former NFL kicker and CBS analyst Jay Feely winning the nomination. State Rep. Joseph Chaplik finished second, while tech executive John Trobough placed third.

A Hall of Fame Career​

Roenick was selected eighth overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1988 NHL Draft and went on to become one of the most successful American-born players in NHL history.

Known for his combination of offensive skill and physical play, Roenick spent more than two decades in the NHL. He played 1,363 games and finished his career with 513 goals, 703 assists, and 1,216 points. He also became one of the few American-born players to reach the 500-goal mark.

Although he is best known for his time with the Blackhawks and Coyotes, Roenick also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks.

He was selected to nine NHL All-Star Games and represented the United States at two Olympics, winning a silver medal in 2002.

In 2024, Roenick received the sport’s ultimate individual honor when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

What Roenick’s Up To Now​

Roenick’s decision to turn down a political career makes sense given how busy his life is.

He currently serves as a Chicago Blackhawks ambassador, returning to the organization where his NHL career began. He has also moved into sports ownership, becoming an investor and partner in the Monroe Moccasins of the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

Roenick is also involved in the business world. He serves as a strategic advisor to Datavault AI and has been involved in projects related to sports technology and NIL opportunities.

He also has his own whiskey brand, Whiskey in the Wild.

With multiple businesses, his work with the Blackhawks, and other projects keeping him busy, Roenick clearly has plenty on his plate.

So while a run for Congress may have been an interesting next chapter for the hockey legend, he appears to have decided that he already has more than enough responsibilities.
